How Long Does Windshield Replacement Take?

Short answer: the hands-on work for a typical windshield commonly takes around an hour or two. Add the adhesive's drive-away time, any camera calibration, and the time it takes to get the right glass, and the whole process can range from a single morning to several days.

The four pieces of the timeline

When people ask how long a windshield replacement takes, they usually mean how long until they can drive away. That depends on four separate things:

StageWhat happensWhat affects the time
1. Getting the glassThe shop identifies and sources the exact windshield for your VINCommon vehicles are often in stock locally; less common glass, HUD or camera windshields may be ordered
2. InstallationOld glass out, frame prepped, new glass bondedVehicle size, trim and mouldings, rust on the frame, sensors to move
3. Drive-away timeThe urethane adhesive reaches minimum strengthThe specific adhesive, temperature and humidity
4. Calibration (if needed)The windshield camera is calibratedStatic vs dynamic method, road and weather conditions

1. Getting the right glass

Before anything else, the shop has to match your windshield. Two vehicles of the same model and year can use different windshields depending on whether they have a camera bracket, rain sensor, heated wiper area, acoustic layer, solar coating or heads-up display. Giving your VIN when you request a quote lets the shop check stock right away. Popular vehicles are often available within a day or so in a metro area like Wichita; specialty glass can take longer. After a big hailstorm, demand jumps and waits get longer for everyone.

2. The installation itself

For a typical car, SUV or pickup, the hands-on replacement commonly takes around an hour, sometimes closer to two. The steps: protect the interior and paint, remove wipers, cowl and mouldings, cut out the old windshield, trim the old urethane and treat any bare metal, prime, lay a new bead of urethane, set the new glass, and reinstall the trim, mirror and sensors. Things that add time include rust on the pinch weld that has to be treated, stubborn mouldings, extra sensors, and large or unusual windshields on work vans and RVs.

3. Drive-away time: the part people forget

A windshield is held in by urethane adhesive, and the vehicle should not be driven until that adhesive reaches its minimum drive-away time, the point where it is strong enough to hold the windshield in a crash. The auto glass replacement standard (ANSI/AGSC/AGRSS) requires installers to follow the adhesive maker's instructions, which depend on the product and the temperature and humidity, and to tell you the time before and after the job (Auto Glass Safety Council, minimum drive-away times).

There is no single number. Some fast-curing products reach drive-away strength relatively quickly in warm, humid weather; the same job on a cold, dry Kansas winter day can take longer. If a shop says you can drive "right away," ask what adhesive they are using and what its drive-away time is under today's conditions.

4. Camera calibration

If your vehicle has a camera behind the windshield for lane keeping or automatic emergency braking, the automaker may require calibration after replacement. A static calibration in a shop commonly takes around an hour; a dynamic calibration means driving the vehicle on well-marked roads until the camera finishes learning, which depends on traffic and weather. Some vehicles need both. AAA's 2023 study notes that calibration adds cost as well as time (AAA, Cost of ADAS Repairs (2023)). If calibration is required and the shop sends it to a dealer or specialist, ask how that affects the schedule. See ADAS calibration in Wichita.

Typical scenarios

  • Older sedan, no camera, glass in stock, mild weather: often a single appointment of a couple of hours including drive-away time.
  • Late-model SUV with a camera: the install plus calibration can make it a half-day, longer if the calibration is done at another location.
  • Heads-up display windshield or uncommon model: the glass may need to be ordered, so the wait before the appointment is the biggest factor.
  • Mobile service in January: cold temperatures can lengthen drive-away time, and wind, snow or rain can push an outdoor job to another day or into a garage.

How to keep it moving

  • Have the VIN ready when you request a quote (it is visible through the lower corner of the windshield and on your insurance card).
  • Mention any camera, rain sensor or heads-up display.
  • If using insurance, have your policy information handy so the claim does not hold things up.
  • For mobile service, offer a garage or covered space in bad weather.
  • Plan not to need the vehicle until the drive-away time has passed, and longer if calibration is involved.

What about chip repair?

A rock chip repair is much faster: commonly well under an hour for a single chip, and the vehicle can usually be driven right away because there is no adhesive bond to cure. See rock chip repair.

For what the job costs, see the Wichita windshield cost guide.

  • Windshield Replacement: New windshield for cracks too long to repair, shattered glass and hail damage, including camera calibration when needed.
  • ADAS Camera Calibration: Recalibrating windshield cameras for lane keeping and emergency braking after glass work.
  • Mobile Windshield Service: Chip repair and windshield replacement at your home, workplace or farm, when weather and your vehicle allow.

Good to know: Requesting a quote is free and there is no obligation. Ask for a written quote that lists the glass, any calibration and the warranty terms.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to replace a windshield?

The hands-on work commonly takes around an hour or two. Then the adhesive needs to reach its drive-away time, and some vehicles need camera calibration, which adds more time.

How long does windshield replacement take to dry?

Urethane adhesive cures rather than dries. The minimum drive-away time depends on the specific adhesive and on temperature and humidity. The installer should tell you the time for your job.

How long does windshield replacement and calibration take?

Plan on more time than the install alone. Static calibration in a shop commonly takes around an hour, and dynamic calibration depends on roads and weather. Some vehicles need both, so a half-day is not unusual.

Does cold weather make windshield replacement take longer?

It can. Many urethanes cure more slowly in cold, dry air, which lengthens drive-away time, and outdoor installs may be rescheduled in snow, rain or strong wind.

Can I wait while my windshield is replaced?

Often, yes, at a shop with a waiting area, or at home or work with mobile service. Ask how long the shop expects the install, cure and any calibration to take.

Why does it take days to get my windshield?

Usually because the exact glass for your vehicle has to be ordered, or because demand is high after a hailstorm. Features like heads-up displays and cameras narrow down which windshields fit.
