Butler County's most populous city

Andover is an eastern suburb of Wichita and the most populous city in Butler County, with 14,892 residents in the 2020 census. It is served by Andover USD 385, which runs two high schools, and Butler Community College operates a campus in town. Andover is also home to the headquarters of fan and heater maker Vornado. Andover Central Park, home of the public library, and Andover Park are the heart of the city's parks system.

Kellogg and the Turnpike

Kellogg Avenue, US-54/400, is Andover's main link to Wichita, carrying commuters, shoppers and trucks between east Wichita, Andover and Augusta. The Kansas Turnpike runs along Andover's west side; its Andover exit (exit 57) connects to 21st Street. Between Kellogg traffic, Turnpike speeds and ongoing growth on the east side of the metro, Andover drivers collect a steady supply of rock chips. Construction zones on growing arterials add loose gravel and dirt tracked onto pavement by trucks. Repairing chips early is the best way to avoid a full replacement; see rock chip repair.

A city shaped by two tornadoes

Andover's severe-weather history is well documented by the National Weather Service in Wichita. On April 26, 1991, an F5 tornado tore through the city, killing 17 people, 13 of them at the Golden Spur Mobile Home Park. On the evening of April 29, 2022, an EF3 tornado with estimated peak winds of 155 mph tracked about 12.75 miles across east Wichita and Andover between roughly 8:10 and 8:31 p.m., injuring three people with no deaths; damage was concentrated near Kellogg and Andover Road and along East 13th Street, according to the NWS event summary.

Tornadoes are rare; hail is not. Storms crossing the east metro regularly damage windshields, back glass and sunroofs. After any storm:

  1. Photograph every piece of glass and the body before moving the vehicle.
  2. Cover broken back glass or a sunroof with plastic taped to the paint.
  3. Do not drive if you cannot see clearly through the windshield.
  4. Call your insurer and request a glass quote early, since demand rises after big storms.

Newer vehicles, more technology

Andover's growing neighborhoods are full of late-model SUVs, trucks and minivans, many with a camera behind the windshield, a rain sensor, heated wiper area or heads-up display. Replacing those windshields usually means matching the exact part by VIN and, often, ADAS calibration. Ask how calibration will be handled before you book, especially if you want mobile service; static calibration usually requires a shop. See rain sensor and HUD windshields.

Common Andover jobs

Choosing a glass shop after a storm

After a big storm, out-of-town crews and door-to-door solicitors sometimes show up in hail-hit neighborhoods. You are free to choose any shop, and Kansas law (K.S.A. 40-2,155) says your insurer cannot require you to use a particular glass company. Before you sign anything, ask what glass will be used, how calibration will be handled, what the safe drive-away time is, and who to call if there is a leak or wind noise later. A written quote that answers those questions is worth more than a fast promise. See how to choose an auto glass shop.

Andover auto glass FAQs

Do I have to use the shop my insurer recommends?

No. Under K.S.A. 40-2,155, an insurer may not require you to use a particular glass company or location, though it can offer a list. Check your policy and ask your insurer how the claim will be handled.

Do Wichita auto glass shops serve Andover?

Yes. Andover borders east Wichita and is part of most local shops' service area, including mobile service.

How do I get from Andover to a Wichita shop?

Most drivers take Kellogg (US-54/400) west. The Kansas Turnpike's Andover exit (exit 57) at 21st Street is the other option.

What tornadoes have hit Andover?

According to the National Weather Service, an F5 tornado struck Andover on April 26, 1991, killing 17 people, and an EF3 tornado crossed east Wichita and Andover on April 29, 2022, injuring three with no deaths.

Will my SUV need calibration after a windshield replacement?

If it has a windshield-mounted camera for lane keeping or automatic braking, it likely will. The shop should check the automaker's requirement for your VIN.

Can a hail-broken sunroof be covered until it is replaced?

Yes. Remove loose glass carefully, tape heavy plastic over the opening on the outside, and keep the vehicle under cover until the replacement.
