The Butler County seat

El Dorado is the county seat of Butler County, with 12,870 residents in the 2020 census. It sits along the western bank of the Walnut River, southwest of El Dorado Lake, and is home to Butler Community College and El Dorado USD 490. The El Dorado Refinery, on the southwest side of town, is the largest refinery in Kansas, with a capacity of about 135,000 barrels per day.

Where four routes meet

El Dorado is at the junction of US-54, US-77 and K-254, and the Kansas Turnpike (I-35) bypasses the city to the northwest, with exits at K-254 (exit 71) and US-77 (exit 76). That gives El Dorado drivers several ways to Wichita and several sources of rock chips:

  • K-254 runs from Wichita through Kechi, bypasses Benton and Towanda, and ends in El Dorado. KDOT counted about 15,800 vehicles a day at the end of the freeway section in El Dorado in 2018.
  • US-54/400 heads west through Augusta and Andover to Kellogg.
  • The Turnpike carries long-haul trucks toward Wichita and Emporia.

Highway speeds and trucks make chips common. See rock chip repair.

Refinery and industrial traffic

A large refinery brings tanker trucks, contractors and shift workers onto local roads around the clock. For workers, that means big parking lots exposed to weather; for contractors and service companies, it means work trucks that collect chips and cracks faster than most. Company vehicles may be handled through a fleet account; see truck and fleet auto glass. If you would like work done in an employer's lot, check site rules first, since industrial sites often restrict outside contractors.

Lake traffic and RVs

El Dorado Lake draws boaters, campers and anglers. Campgrounds and gravel access roads mean trailers, RVs and pickups throwing stones, and RVs stored outdoors are exposed to hail. Large motorhome windshields are often special-order parts. See RV windshield replacement.

Commuting to Wichita on K-254

Many El Dorado residents work in Wichita and many Wichita residents work in El Dorado. K-254 is the most direct route for the north and east sides of the metro, but east of Kechi it is a four-lane divided highway with at-grade intersections, so it mixes highway speeds with turning traffic from rural roads near Benton and Towanda before ending in downtown El Dorado at US-54 and US-77. Morning and evening commutes put drivers behind trucks and farm vehicles on the same stretch every day, which is why chips from K-254 are so common.

Storm history

The April 26, 1991 tornado that devastated Andover continued northeast across Butler County, weakening to F2 to F3 strength near El Dorado and dissipating after crossing El Dorado Lake, according to the National Weather Service in Wichita. Hail is the more frequent threat, damaging windshields, back glass and sunroofs. After a storm, photograph every piece of glass and call your insurer. See hail damage to car glass.

Calibration and newer vehicles

Many newer vehicles have a camera behind the windshield that must be recalibrated after replacement. Static calibration usually requires a shop, so if you choose mobile service, ask how calibration will be handled. See ADAS calibration.

Mobile service in El Dorado

El Dorado is a longer drive from Wichita, so mobile service can save a lot of time. Some Wichita-area shops travel this far and some charge a trip fee. Mention El Dorado when you request a quote. For published price ranges, see the cost guide.

El Dorado auto glass FAQs

Is El Dorado Lake hard on RV and boat-towing vehicles?

Gravel access roads and campground lanes throw stones, and vehicles stored outdoors are exposed to hail. Mud flaps, extra following distance and covered storage all help.

Is a chip from K-254 worth repairing?

Usually. A small, fresh chip outside the driver's view repairs well and costs much less than a replacement. Cover it with clear tape until it is fixed.

Do Wichita auto glass shops come to El Dorado?

Some offer mobile service as far as El Dorado; others may suggest a shop visit, especially for calibration. Mention your location when you request a quote.

Which Turnpike exits serve El Dorado?

Exit 71 at K-254 and exit 76 at US-77. The Turnpike bypasses the city to the northwest.

Can I get my windshield replaced at work?

Sometimes. Industrial sites often restrict outside contractors, so check with your employer before booking mobile service there.

Can an RV windshield be replaced at a campground or storage lot?

Sometimes, but large RV windshields need calm, dry weather and a level surface, and some shops prefer a covered bay. Ask whether on-site work is possible.

How do I protect a chip until it is repaired?

Cover it with clear tape, avoid blasting the defroster or air conditioning directly on the glass, and avoid slamming doors.
