How Much Is Windshield Chip Repair?
Published 2026 sources put a typical single chip repair at roughly $60 to $150, and one Wichita directory page lists the same range. Additional chips on the same visit usually cost less. These are estimates, not quotes; your price depends on the chip.
Estimates only. The figures below come from the published sources listed, gathered in October 2026. They are not quotes or promises. Prices are set by the auto glass shop that quotes your repair.
Published price ranges
| What | Typical published range (estimate) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Chip or crack repair, Wichita | About $60 to $150 | WindshieldMatch, Wichita auto glass page |
| Chip repair, national (2026) | About $60 to $150; average around $110 | Glass & Auto, chip repair cost |
| Windshield replacement, Wichita, standard (for comparison) | About $250 to $450 | WindshieldMatch, Wichita auto glass page |
The comparison row is the point: a chip repair typically costs a fraction of a replacement. More ranges and sources are in the full cost guide.
What changes the price of a chip repair
- Number of chips. Many shops charge a set price for the first chip and less for each additional chip fixed on the same visit.
- Type and size of damage. A small bullseye is the simplest; a combination break with legs, or a short crack, takes more time and resin. Crack repairs are usually priced higher than chips.
- Location. Mobile repairs at your home or office may carry a trip charge with some shops, especially for a single chip or a rural location.
- Condition. A chip that has been collecting dirt and moisture for months can need extra cleaning and may not turn out as clear.
Is it worth repairing a chip?
Usually, yes, if the chip qualifies. The industry repair standard limits repairs in the driver's primary viewing area (a 12-inch-wide strip in front of the steering wheel) to damage no larger than 1 inch across, and it rules out damage at the edge or through both layers of glass (ROLAGS repair standard (ANSI/AGSC/NWRD 002-2022)). If your chip is outside those limits, a repair is a low-cost way to stop it from spreading. If it spreads first, you are usually paying for a full windshield, plus calibration on many newer vehicles.
Math example (illustration only): if a repair is quoted at $100 and a replacement for the same vehicle at $450, repairing now avoids about $350 in cost, before insurance. On a vehicle that would need camera calibration after replacement, the gap is bigger. These are math examples, not quotes.
Does insurance pay for chip repair?
If you have comprehensive coverage, chip repair is usually a covered glass claim. Some policies waive or reduce the deductible for repairs, because a repair now costs the insurer less than a replacement later. Others apply the normal deductible, in which case most repairs cost less than the deductible and you would pay the shop directly. Check your policy or ask your agent. DIY chip repair kits
Retail kits cost a fraction of a professional repair, and they can work on small, clean, fresh bullseye chips. The limits:
- No vacuum cycle to pull air out of the break, so resin may not fill it completely.
- Less control over the curing step.
- Poor results on star breaks, cracks and older dirty chips.
- A failed DIY repair usually cannot be redone by a professional, because the break is already filled with resin.
For a chip in front of the driver or near a camera, a professional repair is the safer choice.
How long a chip repair takes
A single chip is commonly finished in well under an hour, and you can usually drive right away because there is no adhesive bond to cure. Several chips or a crack take longer.
What you get for the money
A good repair restores strength and stops the chip from spreading. It typically makes the damage much less noticeable, but a faint mark or the outline of the impact point often remains. Ask the shop what result to expect and whether it offers any written guarantee on its repairs, and if so, what that covers.
Getting an accurate price
- Photograph each chip with a coin next to it.
- Note where each chip is: in front of the driver, near the edge, or near the camera.
- Count the chips.
- Say whether you want shop or mobile service.
- Request a quote and mention whether you plan to use insurance.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to fix a chip in a windshield?
Published 2026 sources put a typical single chip repair at roughly $60 to $150. Additional chips on the same visit usually cost less. These are estimates; the shop sets the price.
How much is windshield crack repair?
Crack repairs are usually priced higher than chip repairs because they take more time and resin, and many shops limit how long a crack they will repair. Ask for a quote with photos.
Is chip repair free with insurance?
Sometimes. Some policies waive the deductible for chip repairs; others do not. Kansas does not require insurers to waive it, so check your own policy.
Is it worth fixing a small windshield chip?
Usually. A repair costs a fraction of a replacement and helps stop the chip from spreading into a crack, which typically means a new windshield.
Do DIY windshield repair kits work?
They can work on small, clean, fresh chips. Results are less reliable on star breaks, cracks and older chips, and a failed DIY repair usually cannot be redone by a professional.
Why do additional chips cost less?
Most of the setup, travel and inspection happens once per visit, so many shops price the first chip at a set amount and each additional chip on the same windshield at a lower rate. Ask how the shop prices multiple chips.
Does mobile chip repair cost more?
Some shops charge the same, others add a trip charge, especially for a single chip or a rural location. Ask when you request a quote.
