Sunroof, moonroof or panoramic roof?
The terms get mixed up, but for a glass shop the differences matter:
- Sunroof / moonroof: a single glass panel that tilts and slides, usually over the front seats.
- Panoramic roof: a large glass area, often two panels (one that slides and one fixed) or a single fixed piece covering most of the roof.
- Fixed glass roof: a glass roof that does not open, common on some newer vehicles and EVs.
Each one uses a different part, and many are sold only from the automaker. Give the shop your VIN so it can identify the exact glass.
Why sunroof glass breaks
- Hail. Roof glass faces straight up, which makes it vulnerable in the spring and early-summer storms that cross south-central Kansas. The National Weather Service classifies hail 1 inch or larger as severe (National Weather Service, what makes a storm severe).
- Road debris. Rocks thrown up by trucks at highway speed can hit roof glass, especially on lower vehicles.
- Unexplained breakage. Some panoramic roofs have shattered with no obvious impact. NHTSA, the federal vehicle safety agency, investigated panoramic sunroof fractures across many manufacturers and closed that investigation in 2021 without finding a safety defect (NHTSA EA14-002 closing report). Consumer Reports has reported that the ceramic-printed band around the edge of the glass can make it weaker. If your roof glass broke without an impact, check for recalls on NHTSA's website using your VIN and mention it to the shop.
- Stress and installation issues. Body flex, a misaligned panel or a damaged track can stress the glass.
Glass replacement vs. mechanism repair
Not every sunroof problem is the glass. Common issues fall into three groups:
- Broken glass. Tempered roof glass shatters and must be replaced. Laminated roof glass may crack but stay in place; it is replaced too.
- Stuck or noisy panel. A sunroof that will not open or close, moves crooked, or grinds usually has a problem with the motor, cables, tracks or guides. Some auto glass shops handle this; others refer it to a dealer or specialist.
- Leaks. Most sunroofs are not perfectly sealed. They have a drain channel around the glass with tubes running down the pillars. When the drains clog with leaves, dust or debris, water overflows into the headliner. Cleaning the drains often fixes the leak without new glass.
When you request a quote, say which of these you have so the shop brings the right parts.
What sunroof glass replacement involves
The installer protects the interior, removes the broken glass (and the thousands of small pieces that fall into the tracks, drain channel and headliner), detaches the panel from its mounting brackets, installs the new glass, aligns it so it sits flush with the roof and seals at the edges, and tests the open, close and tilt functions. Panoramic fixed panels may be bonded with urethane and need cure time before driving. Because broken glass can land in the mechanism, the shop may recommend cleaning or adjusting the tracks too.
Right after the glass breaks
- Pull over safely if it breaks while driving; a shattered roof panel is loud and startling but usually stays largely in place.
- Photograph the damage before you clean up.
- Cover the opening with heavy plastic taped to the roof paint, not to the headliner.
- Do not try to operate the sunroof with broken glass in the track.
- Vacuum glass from the seats and floor with care; wear gloves.
Parts availability and timing
Roof glass is less common than windshields, and many panels are dealer-only parts. After a widespread hailstorm, demand for roof glass jumps. A local shop can tell you whether the part is in stock in the Wichita area or has to be ordered, but it cannot always predict when back-ordered parts will arrive. Covering the opening well matters if you have to wait.
Paying for it
Sunroof glass damaged by hail or road debris is generally handled under comprehensive coverage, subject to your deductible. Mechanical failures (a broken motor or cable) are usually not glass claims. If the glass broke on its own, a recall or the automaker's warranty may apply, so check those first. See insurance claims in Kansas and the specialty glass section of the cost guide.
Keeping a sunroof healthy
- Clear leaves and debris from the channel around the glass a few times a year, especially in fall.
- Check the drain tubes if you ever see water on the headliner or a damp carpet near the pillars.
- Keep the tracks clean; grit in the tracks makes the motor work harder and can misalign the panel.
- Park in a garage or under cover when severe storms with hail are forecast, if you can.
- Do not force a stuck panel closed; that can bend tracks or break the glass.
Questions to ask about a sunroof quote
- Is the glass OEM or aftermarket, and is it the exact part for my trim and roof type?
- Does the price include cleaning broken glass out of the tracks and drain channel?
- If the mechanism is damaged, can you repair it, or will I need a dealer or specialist?
- Is there a cure time before I can drive or wash the vehicle?
What does it cost? See published Wichita-area and national ranges for side, back and specialty glass costs in the cost guide.

Frequently asked questions
Can a cracked sunroof be repaired?
Usually not. Most sunroof glass is tempered and shatters when it fails, so it has to be replaced. Laminated roof glass may crack and stay in place, but it is normally replaced as well.
Why did my panoramic sunroof shatter for no reason?
Spontaneous breakage of panoramic roofs has been reported across many brands. NHTSA investigated it and closed the case in 2021 without finding a safety defect; Consumer Reports has pointed to the weaker ceramic-printed edge band as one factor. Check for recalls with your VIN on NHTSA's website before paying out of pocket.
My sunroof leaks. Does the glass need replacing?
Often not. Most sunroof leaks come from clogged drain tubes around the glass channel. Cleaning the drains frequently solves it. A torn seal or misaligned panel can also cause leaks.
Does insurance cover a broken sunroof?
Glass broken by hail or road debris is usually covered under comprehensive, subject to your deductible. Mechanical problems with the motor or tracks generally are not glass claims.
How long does sunroof glass replacement take?
It varies widely by vehicle. A simple sliding panel can be relatively quick; panoramic or bonded roof glass takes longer and may need cure time. Parts availability is often the bigger factor in timing.
Is sunroof glass harder to get than a windshield?
Often. Many sunroof and panoramic panels are dealer-only parts, and after a big hailstorm demand jumps. A local shop can tell you whether the part is in stock or has to be ordered.
Can I drive with a shattered sunroof?
Cover the opening first and drive gently. Loose glass can fall, and an uncovered opening lets in rain. Get it replaced as soon as the part is available.
