The Reno County seat

Hutchinson is the county seat of Reno County, on the northeast bank of the Arkansas River, with 40,006 residents in the 2020 census. It has been home to salt mines since 1887, hence the nickname "Salt City." Hutchinson hosts the Kansas State Fair every year, along with the NJCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, and it is home to Hutchinson Community College, the Cosmosphere aerospace museum and Strataca, the underground salt museum. Prairie Dunes Country Club is nearby, and Amtrak's Southwest Chief stops at the Hutchinson station.

K-96, US-50 and the drive to Wichita

Hutchinson sits at the intersection of US-50 and K-96, about 39 miles northwest of Wichita. From Wichita, K-96 runs northwest through Maize, Mount Hope and Haven to Hutchinson, where it bypasses the city to the west. US-50 runs east-west south of the city and continues east toward Newton, and K-61 runs through the eastern part of the city before exiting to the northeast. These are long, fast drives through farm country with plenty of grain trucks, and they are where most Hutchinson drivers pick up chips. See rock chip repair.

State Fair season

When the Kansas State Fair is on, Hutchinson's roads and parking lots fill with visitors from across the state. Grass and gravel parking areas, trailers and campers, and crowded streets bring more chips, dings and the occasional break-in. If you find a broken window after a day at the fair, photograph it, cover the opening and request a quote. See side window replacement.

Weather extremes and windshields

Hutchinson's weather swings hard. The city recorded a low of −19°F on February 16, 2021, and a high of 113°F on July 27, 2011, according to the climate data in its Wikipedia entry. Big temperature swings are hard on damaged glass: a chip that sits through a cold snap can crack when the defroster hits it, and summer sun can spread a crack across a windshield. Repair chips promptly, and avoid pointing hot or cold air straight at damaged glass. See winter windshield cracks.

Commuting both ways on K-96

Hutchinson is big enough to draw commuters of its own, so K-96 carries traffic in both directions at rush hour: Hutchinson residents headed to jobs in Wichita, and Wichita-area residents headed to jobs in Reno County. The long, fast stretch past Haven and Mount Hope has rural intersections where farm trucks and equipment enter the highway. If you drive it daily, check your windshield regularly for small chips you might not have noticed, especially low on the passenger side.

Hail and storms

Reno County is open country, and storms building in western Kansas often reach Hutchinson first. Hail damage to windshields, back glass and sunroofs is common. After a storm, photograph every piece of glass, cover broken openings and call your insurer. See hail damage to car glass and insurance claims in Kansas.

Farm and salt-industry trucks

Agriculture and the salt industry keep heavy trucks on Hutchinson-area roads. Work trucks collect chips and cracks fast, and many businesses manage glass through fleet accounts. See truck and fleet auto glass and farm and heavy equipment glass.

Shop or mobile?

Hutchinson is a long drive from Wichita, so ask about mobile service and whether a trip charge applies. If your vehicle needs static camera calibration, a shop visit may be required. For published price ranges, see the cost guide.

Hutchinson auto glass FAQs

Can windshield work be done during State Fair week?

Usually, but demand for appointments and parking can both be tighter in town while the fair is on. Request a quote early and mention where the vehicle will be.

Does a heads-up display windshield need special glass?

Yes. HUD windshields use special glass to keep the projected image sharp. Make sure the quote specifies a HUD-compatible windshield.

Do Wichita auto glass shops serve Hutchinson?

Some do, often with a trip charge given the distance. Mention Hutchinson when you request a quote, and ask about mobile service and calibration.

How far is Hutchinson from Wichita?

About 39 miles northwest, at the intersection of US-50 and K-96.

Why do cold mornings crack chipped windshields?

Rapid temperature changes, such as hot defroster air on cold glass, stress the damaged area and can run a chip into a crack. Warm the glass gradually.

My car was broken into at the State Fair. What should I do?

Photograph the damage, report the theft, cover the opening with plastic and request a side window replacement quote.

Can a chip from K-96 be repaired?

Usually, if it is smaller than about a quarter and outside the driver's direct view. Cover it with clear tape until it is repaired.
