A town on the county line

Mulvane is a city of 6,286 people (2020 census) in both Sedgwick and Sumner counties; its Main Street follows part of the county line, and the town center is about five miles west of the point where Sedgwick, Sumner, Butler and Cowley counties meet. It is known for Mulvane Old Settlers, one of the longest-running community events in Kansas, which started in 1873, ten years before the town was officially incorporated. Cowley County Community College operates a satellite campus in town.

Three routes, three kinds of rock chips

  • K-15 begins as a four-lane divided highway just southeast of Mulvane at K-53, runs through Mulvane and Derby, and merges with I-135 in south Wichita. It is the main commuter route north, shared with trucks and contractors.
  • K-53 is a two-lane highway from US-81 on the county line east into Mulvane, where it becomes West Bridge Street, to K-15. KDOT counted about 4,470 vehicles a day on K-53 in Mulvane in 2017.
  • The Kansas Turnpike's Mulvane exit (exit 33) connects to K-53 and East 119th Street South, putting Mulvane drivers on I-35 toward Wichita or Wellington and Oklahoma.

Highway-speed chips on K-15 and the Turnpike, plus gravel from rural roads around town, keep chip repair busy here. See rock chip repair.

West of town, K-53 crosses the Arkansas River and runs along the county line through flat farm ground to US-81. It is a two-lane highway its whole length, so meeting oncoming trucks and passing farm equipment are part of the drive.

Casino traffic and big parking lots

In 2008 and 2009 Mulvane annexed land toward the west side of I-35, and the Kansas Star Casino opened on that land in 2011. A large venue means large parking lots, visitors from across the region and late-night traffic on K-53 and the Turnpike. Lots are exposed to hail, and break-ins happen at busy venues anywhere. If you find a smashed window, photograph it, cover the opening and see side window replacement.

Rural roads on both sides of the line

Outside town, both Sedgwick and Sumner counties have plenty of gravel and chip-seal roads serving farms and acreages. Small chips from meeting trucks on loose surfaces are common, often several at a time. Many can be repaired if they are fixed before they spread. Farm pickups and equipment glass are part of the mix too; see truck and fleet glass and farm and heavy equipment glass.

Storms south of Wichita

Storms that move up from Sumner County often cross Mulvane on their way north. Hail damage to windshields, back glass and sunroofs is the most common storm-related glass job. After a storm, photograph all glass before moving the vehicle and call your insurer. See hail damage to car glass.

Calibration on newer vehicles

Many newer cars, SUVs and pickups have a camera behind the windshield, and replacing that windshield often means ADAS calibration. Static calibration usually needs a shop, so ask how it will be handled if you choose mobile service.
