Why a broken side window cannot be repaired
Most door windows are tempered glass. Tempering makes the glass much stronger than ordinary glass, and when it does break, it crumbles into small, blunt pieces instead of sharp shards. The trade-off is that tempered glass cannot be repaired: once it is chipped deeply or cracked, it usually shatters completely. A broken side window is almost always a replacement.
A growing number of vehicles use laminated side glass, especially on the front doors, for noise reduction and security. Laminated side glass behaves more like a windshield: it cracks but stays in one piece. It costs more to replace, and it matters when ordering, so check the small printed label (the "bug") in the corner of the glass or mention it when you request a quote.
Right after a side window breaks
- Stay safe and document it. If it was a break-in, take photos before you clean anything and consider a police report. Insurance may ask for one for theft claims.
- Do not run the window switch. Broken glass in the door can jam the regulator, and moving the window can damage it further.
- Cover the opening. Heavy plastic sheeting taped to the painted door frame keeps rain and dust out. Painter's tape is gentler on paint than duct tape, and tape on the paint is better than tape on the interior trim.
- Carefully remove loose glass from the seats with gloves and a shop vacuum. Expect to find more glass later: it collects in seat tracks, door pockets and vents.
- Request a quote with the year, make, model and which window is broken (front or rear door, driver or passenger side, vent or quarter glass).
What a side window replacement involves
The installer removes the interior door panel, vacuums the broken glass out of the door cavity, checks the regulator and its mounting clips, installs the new glass, and adjusts it so it seals properly against the weatherstrip at the top and front. The interior is vacuumed, including the seat tracks and floor. Expect the shop to point out any glass that cannot be reached without taking more of the interior apart. Most door glass jobs are relatively quick compared with a windshield, and because there is no urethane to cure, the vehicle can usually be driven right away.
Door glass is commonly replaced at the vehicle's location, so mobile service is a popular choice for side windows, as long as there is a dry place to work.
Window will not go up? It may not be the glass
If the glass is intact but dropped into the door, crooked, or stuck, the problem is usually the window regulator (the track and lift mechanism), its motor, or the switch. Cable-type regulators in many vehicles are known to fail with age; clicking or grinding while the window moves is a common sign. Some auto glass shops replace regulators and motors; others refer that work to a mechanic. Mention the symptoms when you ask for a quote so the right parts are in hand.
Vent glass, quarter glass and odd shapes
Small fixed windows (often called vent glass or quarter glass) sit in the rear doors or behind the rear doors on many SUVs and minivans. Some are set in a rubber channel, some are bonded with urethane like a windshield, and some come as a single assembly with the trim. They can be harder to find than door glass, and the price does not always shrink with the size. If a quarter window is broken, give the shop the VIN so it can find the right part.
Break-ins and security
Side windows are the most common target in vehicle break-ins because tempered glass breaks with a sharp point. Laminated side glass, where fitted, is harder to get through. After a break-in, check the door lock, the trim around the window and the wiring under the dash, and remember that replacing glass does not replace stolen items; that is a separate part of a claim.
Tint after replacing a side window
Factory "privacy glass" on rear windows of many SUVs and trucks is tinted in the glass itself, so a replacement window should match it. Aftermarket film on a broken window has to be reapplied after replacement. Kansas law limits how dark window tint can be on most vehicles, so if you are adding film, use a tint shop that knows the current rules.
Insurance for side windows
Side window damage from vandalism, theft, hail or flying objects is usually handled under comprehensive coverage, subject to your deductible. Because many side windows cost less than a typical deductible, paying out of pocket is common. Kansas law says your insurer cannot require you to use a particular glass company (K.S.A. 40-2,155). See insurance claims in Kansas and the side and back glass section of the cost guide.
Questions to ask before you book
- Is the quoted glass tempered or laminated, and does it match the factory tint?
- Does the price include the door-panel clips, vacuuming the door cavity and cleaning the interior?
- If the regulator is damaged, can you replace it on the same visit, and what would it add?
- Can the work be done where the car is parked, and what do you need there (shade, a dry surface, room to open the door fully)?
- What does your written warranty cover for wind noise, rattles and leaks?
Getting these answers up front makes it easier to compare two quotes on an equal footing, because a lower price that leaves out cleanup or clips is not really lower.
What does it cost? See published Wichita-area and national ranges for side window costs in the cost guide.
Good to know: Requesting a quote is free and there is no obligation. Ask for a written quote that lists the glass, any calibration and the warranty terms.
Frequently asked questions
Can a cracked side window be repaired?
Usually not. Most side windows are tempered glass, which cannot be repaired and usually shatters completely once damaged. Laminated side glass can crack without falling out, but it is normally replaced too.
How long does side window replacement take?
Door glass is usually one of the quicker auto glass jobs, often done in about an hour, though cleanup after a shattered window and regulator problems can add time. The vehicle can generally be driven right away.
Is it safe to drive with a broken side window?
It is better not to. Loose glass can fall from the frame, and an open window lets in weather. Kansas law also prohibits damaged windows that substantially obstruct the driver's view. Cover the opening and have it replaced soon.
Will the shop clean up all the broken glass?
Installers vacuum the door cavity, seats and floor as part of the job, but tempered glass breaks into many small pieces, and some can hide in vents and seat tracks. Ask what cleanup is included.
Does insurance cover a broken car window from a break-in?
Usually under comprehensive coverage, subject to your deductible. Many side windows cost less than the deductible, so paying out of pocket is common. Stolen belongings are a separate part of the claim.
Can a side window be replaced at my home or work?
Often, yes. Door glass does not need urethane cure time, so it is one of the easier jobs to do on-site, as long as there is a dry, reasonably sheltered place to work. Ask the shop whether mobile service is available where you are.
How do I know if my side window is laminated?
Look for the small printed label in a corner of the glass; laminated glass is often marked as such. Laminated windows also crack in a web pattern without falling apart. Give the shop your VIN and it can confirm.
