A small city southwest of Wichita

Clearwater is a city of 2,653 people (2020 census) just southwest of Wichita, served by Clearwater USD 264. It is small enough that most errands, jobs and appointments mean a drive into the city, and rural enough that the drive starts on country roads.

The K-42 commute

K-42 is Clearwater's link to Wichita. The highway once ran right past the town, but a realignment approved in 1939 bypassed Clearwater to eliminate sharp curves; today South 135th Street runs south from K-42 to Clearwater. Northeast of that junction, K-42 crosses the Wichita-Valley Center Floodway and ends at an interchange with I-235 on Wichita's southwest side. Southwest, it heads through Viola toward Kingman County.

K-42 is a fast two-lane and four-lane route used by commuters, farm trucks and freight. Passing on a two-lane highway, meeting trucks, and following vehicles that drift onto gravel shoulders are all common ways to get a chip. Once you merge onto I-235, highway-speed rock strikes take over. See rock chip repair.

Southwest toward Viola and Kingman County

Not everyone in Clearwater drives toward Wichita. Southwest of the 135th Street junction, K-42 runs through Clonmel, crosses the Ninnescah River and continues past Viola toward Kingman County, with an intersection with K-49 just north of Viola. That stretch is rural two-lane highway, with grain trucks, livestock haulers and farm equipment moving between fields. Passing slower vehicles on a two-lane highway is one of the riskiest moments for a windshield, because you close on the truck ahead at speed while it throws whatever is on the road behind it.

Rural roads around town

Outside Clearwater, section-line roads, gravel and chip-seal surround farm ground and acreages. Meeting other vehicles on loose surfaces throws stones, and dusty summer conditions mean wipers drag grit across the glass. Replace streaking wiper blades and keep washer fluid topped up. If you have several small chips, ask whether repairing them or replacing the windshield makes more sense for your vehicle.

Severe weather history

Southwest Sedgwick County sits in the path of storms moving in from the southwest. On April 26, 1991, the tornado that later reached F5 strength in Andover began about a mile and a half south of Clearwater before tracking northeast through Haysville, across McConnell Air Force Base and into Butler County, according to the National Weather Service in Wichita. Events like that are rare, but hail is a near-annual risk, and it is the most common reason vehicles need a windshield, back glass and sunroof replaced together. See hail damage to car glass.

Common jobs for Clearwater drivers

Mobile service in Clearwater

With the drive into Wichita, mobile service is popular in Clearwater. A garage or shop building makes it weather-proof, which matters on windy days in open country. When you request a quote, ask about mobile service to Clearwater and whether a trip charge applies. If your vehicle needs static camera calibration, that part may need a shop visit.

Clearwater auto glass FAQs

Is a chip from K-42 worth repairing if it is small?

Usually. A small, fresh chip is the easiest to repair and the least likely to leave a visible mark. Cover it with clear tape until it is fixed, and avoid blasting the defroster on a cold morning.

My older car has several chips. Repair or replace?

It depends on how many there are and where. A few chips outside the driver's view are usually repairable; many chips clustered in front of the driver often make replacement the better choice. A shop can advise after seeing photos.

Is mobile windshield service available in Clearwater?

Many Wichita-area shops travel to Clearwater for mobile work. Mention your location; travel distance and any trip charge vary by shop.

Why do I get chips on K-42?

K-42 carries fast traffic, including trucks, and two-lane sections mean passing and meeting vehicles that drift onto gravel shoulders. Stones thrown at those speeds chip windshields.

Can a cracked windshield be repaired?

Short cracks that have not reached the edge and are outside the driver's direct view are sometimes repairable. Long, edge or stress cracks usually mean replacement.

What should I do after hail in Clearwater?

Photograph all glass and body damage, cover broken openings with plastic, call your insurer, and request a glass quote early.

How do I get to a shop from Clearwater?

Most drivers take South 135th Street north to K-42 and continue to I-235 into Wichita. Mobile service can save the trip.
