Windshield replacement cost: what drives the price

Two windshields for vehicles parked side by side in a Wichita lot can differ in price by several hundred dollars. The biggest factors:

  • Your vehicle. Larger windshields, low-volume models, luxury brands and EVs usually cost more. The 2026 Auto Glass Estimator study found averages ranging from under $250 for some economy cars to well over $700 for some luxury and electric models.
  • Features in the glass. A camera bracket, rain and light sensor, heated wiper area, acoustic interlayer, solar coating or heads-up display each change the part number and the price.
  • OEM vs aftermarket glass. Glass made for the automaker (OEM) usually costs noticeably more than aftermarket or OE-equivalent glass. One national glass company estimates OEM at about two to three times the price of comparable aftermarket glass.
  • Calibration. Vehicles with a windshield camera often need it calibrated after replacement (see below).
  • Mouldings and clips. Some vehicles need new one-time-use mouldings or clips with every replacement.
  • Rust or frame repair. Corrosion around the opening has to be treated before the new glass goes in.
  • Mobile vs in-shop. Some shops add a trip charge for mobile work (see below).

See windshield replacement for what the job involves.

ADAS camera calibration cost

Lane keeping, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and similar features often rely on a camera mounted behind the windshield. After replacement, many automakers call for that camera to be calibrated. AAA's 2023 study of ADAS repair costs priced windshield replacements on a 2023 Ford F-150, Nissan Rogue and Toyota Camry and found that the camera-related work (moving the camera to the new glass and calibrating it) averaged about $360, or about a quarter of an average total of roughly $1,440 using OEM parts. One national glass company lists static calibration at about $150 to $300 and dynamic calibration at about $100 to $200, with some vehicles needing both. Always ask whether calibration is included in a quote or billed separately, and who performs it. More detail: ADAS calibration after windshield replacement.

Chip and crack repair cost

Resin repair is the cheapest auto glass fix. Published 2026 guides put a single chip at roughly $60 to $160, with additional chips on the same visit usually costing less, and longer crack repairs at the higher end. Insurance often treats repairs favorably because they cost much less than a replacement; some policies reduce or waive the deductible for repairs, others do not. The cost of waiting can be high: a chip that spreads into a long crack usually turns a repair into a full replacement. See windshield chip and crack repair.

Example (illustration only): if a chip repair is quoted at $100 and a replacement for the same vehicle at $400, repairing promptly saves about $300, before any insurance. If your policy waives the deductible for repairs, the repair may cost you nothing. These are math examples, not quotes.

Side and back window cost

Most side and back windows are tempered glass, which cannot be repaired and must be replaced. One 2026 guide lists typical side window replacement at about $200 to $450 for a sedan and $250 to $600 for an SUV or truck, with luxury vehicles higher, and back glass at about $300 to $800, or $400 to $1,000 with a defroster grid. Laminated side glass, sliding pickup rear windows, built-in antennas and hard-to-find quarter glass can all cost more. A window regulator or motor is a separate repair from the glass. See side and back window repair.

Mobile service cost

Many shops charge the same price for mobile work as for in-shop work, while others add a trip charge, especially for single chip repairs or rural locations farther from Wichita. Insurance claims are often paid the same either way. Ask whether the quote includes any trip charge, and whether your vehicle's calibration can be done on-site or requires a shop visit. See mobile windshield service.

Insurance claims for auto glass in Kansas

This is general information, not insurance or legal advice. Every policy is different, so check yours or ask your agent.

  • Comprehensive coverage. Glass damage from rocks, hail, falling objects and vandalism is usually handled under the comprehensive (other than collision) part of an auto policy. The Kansas Insurance Department's shopper's guide describes comprehensive as covering damage not caused by a collision. Liability-only policies do not cover damage to your own vehicle. (Kansas Insurance Department, Auto Insurance Shopper's Guide)
  • Glass coverage and deductibles. The same guide lists auto glass coverage as an optional coverage that provides partial or full coverage of a damaged or broken windshield. Whether you pay a deductible for glass depends on your policy.
  • Your choice of shop. Under Kansas law, an insurer may not require you to use a particular company for auto glass replacement or repair. It may give you a list of shops, and if you use a shop that is not on the list, it may ask you to get up to three competitive bids and is not required to pay more than the lowest prevailing market price. (K.S.A. 40-2,155)
  • Do the math. If your comprehensive deductible is $500 and the quote is $400, a claim would not pay anything. If your policy has low- or zero-deductible glass coverage, a claim may cost you little or nothing.
  • Document it. Take photos of the damage and keep the invoice, glass part number and any calibration report.
  • Hail with body damage. If a storm damaged both glass and body panels, ask your insurer how they want the claim handled; glass is often handled separately and sooner.

What a good written quote includes

  1. The exact glass: OEM or aftermarket, and features such as camera bracket, rain sensor, heating or heads-up display.
  2. Labor, mouldings, clips and disposal of the old glass.
  3. Calibration: whether it is needed, which type, who does it and whether it is included.
  4. Any mobile trip charge.
  5. Drive-away time and after-care instructions.
  6. The shop's written warranty terms for leaks and workmanship.

How much does windshield chip repair cost?

Published 2026 guides put a typical chip repair at roughly $60 to $160, and the Wichita directory page lists $60 to $150. Additional chips on the same visit usually cost less. Many policies with comprehensive coverage cover repairs, sometimes without a deductible.

How much does ADAS camera calibration add?

AAA's 2023 study found that transferring and calibrating the windshield camera averaged about $360 on the vehicles it priced. One national glass company lists static calibration at about $150 to $300 and dynamic calibration at about $100 to $200.

How much does it cost to replace a side window or back glass?

One 2026 guide puts a typical sedan side window at about $200 to $450 and SUV or truck side glass at about $250 to $600. Back glass is often about $300 to $800, or up to about $1,000 with a defroster grid.

Should I use insurance or pay out of pocket?

Compare the job cost with your comprehensive deductible. If the deductible is close to or higher than the quote, paying yourself may be simpler. If your policy has glass coverage with a low or zero deductible, a claim may cost you little or nothing. Ask your agent.
